Games should be compulsory in every school because a student should be physically strong along with mental development. Moreover it’s not compulsory the every student necessarily good in studies. Some are good in studies and some in sports. Annual Sports Day is one of the major events in the school.
Every year my school celebrates the Sports Day in the month of November at school playground. The preparations are made much in advance. A day earlier the tent is put up. Chairs are arranged in rows along the boundary wall of the ground so that the invited parents and non- participating students can sit and watch the event peacefully. Our school also invite chief guest to preside over the function. As on every Sports Day, this year too, there was large gathering. The Chief Guest unfurled the flag. He gave a short but encouraging speech. The function began with the march past of all the participating students all looking very smart in their white dresses. I was one of them. Then the races began. Our sports teacher blew the whistle for the race to begin and another teacher noted the time with the help of a stopwatch. A photographer took the photos.
There was 100 meters, 200 meters and half a miles races. I took part in 200 meters race and won of second place. The most interesting race of 50 meters was specially held for the tiny-tots of the school. Every one enjoyed the scene and cheered the little ones. Some who lost their balance, fell and began to cry. Our teacher took them away and gave them sweets. Hurdle race and relay race were also held. Funny events like potato race, lemon race, three-legged race and sack race were a lot of fun.
After this there were the high jump and long jump events. My friend beat all others in high jump. Another exciting event was the tug-of-war between the students and the teachers. Everyone eagerly watched this new events as students continued to pull hard to win. There were loud cheers when teachers were defeated. The parents were not left out. The Principal of my school announced the event ‘passing the chair’ for them. There were many funny scenes as they tried to grab a seat every time the whistle stopped. There were loud claps from everyone. We enjoyed very much.
At the end the Chief Guest distributed the prizes to the winners. My friend was declared the best athlete of the year. He won six prizes. The Chief Guest praised all the athletes and congratulated the winners. Then the Principal gave a small speech to thank the Chief Guest. He also praises all the athletes and teachers for their hard work.
Refreshment were distributed to all the students and the guests. Lastly, the National Anthem was sung and the function came to close. Sports Day was thus full of fun and excitement. I went home with my silver cup in my hands. It was a wonderful day.
