Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born on 23 July 1856 in an orthodox Brahmin family in the small town of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra. His mother passed away when he was ten years old and his father when he was sixteen. He was a formidable political leader, Sanskrit scholar, writer and political philosopher greatly influenced by Western thought on politics. Tilak was fought for the independence of India throughout his life and he is a source of inspiration for all of us even today.
Tilak was the Father of Indian movement who ignited the spark of patriotism with his quote in Marathi, “स्वराज्य हा माझा जन्मसिद्ध हक्क आहे आणि तो मी मिळवणारच” (Swarajya is my birthright and I shall have it) inspired millions of Indian to join the freedom struggle. He strongly opposed the Gandhi’s policy of nonviolence and Satyagraha and advocated the use of force where necessary that’s why British colonial authorities called him “Father of the Indian unrest.” He was a great reformer and throughout his life he emphasized on the concepts of women education and women empowerment. His two newspapers ‘Mahratta’ (English) and ‘Kesari’ (Marathi) create awareness about British policies, his ideas of nationalism and need of Swaraj.
