On Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s birth anniversary I salute the great freedom fighter that ignited the spark of patriotism with his quote in Marathi, “स्वराज्य हा माझा जन्मसिद्ध हक्क आहे आणि तो मी मिळवणारच” (Swarajya is my birthright and I shall have it) inspired millions of Indian to join the freedom struggle. He was universally known as the Father of Indian movement also conferred with the honorary title of “Lokmanya”, which literally means “accepted by the people as their leader”.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak was an Indian nationalist, social reformer and an independence activist was one of the prime architect of modern India and strongest advocate of Swaraj. He was a great reformer and throughout his life he emphasized on the concepts of women education and women empowerment. He introduced two newspapers called ‘Mahratta’ (English) and ‘Kesari’ (Marathi) to create awareness about British policies, his ideas of nationalism and need of Swaraj. He strongly opposed the Gandhi’s policy of nonviolence and Satyagraha and advocated the use of force where necessary that’s why British colonial authorities called him “Father of the Indian unrest.”
Born on 23 July 1856 in an orthodox Marathi Brahmin family in Ratnagiri he is an inspiration to all of us even today. He was the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement and a real hero who fought for his motherland and inspired others to do so. On his birth anniversary let’s take a pledge that we all will walk on his footsteps and always fight for the honour of our mother land.
