Holi is a famous Hindu festival generally falls in the month of March on the last full moon day of the lunar month Phalguna (February/March) but the exact date varies from year to year. It is a festival of colors celebrated throughout the India with great enthusiasm and joy. Like any other Indian Festival Holi is also associated with a great history and significance. Long years ago, Holika, sister of Hiranyakashyap tried to burn Vishnu devotee Prahlad in fire by taking him in her lap. Prahlad was a true devotee so saved from fire by the Vishnu however Holika was burnt and changed to ashes. From then, Hindu people celebrate the victory of goodness over the evil powers every year as a festival of Holi.

A day before playing colors on Holi, people burn wood and cow dung cakes at night as a symbol of burning Holika known as ‘Holika Dahan’ (burning of Holika) or ‘Chhoti Holi’ (little ‘Holi’) after which prayers are offered. In the next morning, people play with colors and water with their family members, relatives, friends and neighbours. Kids especially enjoy the festival by throwing colored water filled balloons to each other or playing with their water guns/pitchakri. This is a great festival to forgive all fights and conflicts not with your friends only but with your enemies too. People visit to their friends and relatives home, apply colors and gulal to their forehead, enjoy sweets, and special preparations made for this colorful festival.

We should celebrate this colorful festival with love and affection. This festival helps in revitalizing relationships and strengthening emotional bonds between people. It’s good to use natural herbal colors for playing Holi instead of playing with artificial harmful colors. Do not ruin mix fun and alcohol on the festival as it can ruin the mood of this colorful day. Do not throw balloons and dirty water on others as it can hurt them and very unhygienic. Celebrate Holi only with love and affection and with lots of colors and sweets.
